Solstice Gold Study is a meditation on light, depth, and seasonal threshold. The work begins with a hand-made gesso ground, slowly built and then flooded with Mont Blanc blue ink, allowing the pigment to sink, stain, and settle into the surface. The blue holds a nocturnal intensity, recalling the long hours of winter darkness and the vastness of the night sky.

Gold leaf is then applied and encaustic wax is burned into the surface, sealing and embalming the layers beneath. Through heat and touch, the wax softens and fuses the materials, creating subtle shifts, fissures, and moments of luminosity where light is caught and held.

The painting balances opposites — darkness and radiance, stillness and movement, fragility and endurance. Like the solstice itself, it marks a pause in time: a quiet turning point where reflection gives way to renewal, and light begins its slow return.
