Solstice Alba is a meditation on light, stillness, and seasonal threshold. The painting begins with a traditional hand-made gesso ground, composed of chalk and natural earth pigments drawn from the land. Built slowly in layers, the surface is shaped by pressure, abrasion, and time, allowing subtle fractures and tensions to emerge.
The broken gesso is sealed with a hot encaustic wax, which is burned into the surface, embalming the layers beneath. Through heat and touch, the wax fuses the materials together, creating minute shifts, fissures, and moments of subtle change.
The pale, restrained surface carries a nocturnal intensity ; a sense of winter light; echoing the solstice moment when darkness reaches its depth and the return of light is only just perceptible.
Balancing fragility and endurance, Solstice Alba holds a pause in time: a contemplative space where stillness, renewal, and subtle transformation coexist.
