Alter is a quiet, contemplative work that carries the same material depth and restrained intensity as my larger paintings. The surface is built slowly, layer by layer, beginning with a traditional gesso ground that is allowed to fracture and break. These fissures are then held and stabilised with encaustic wax, creating a surface that is both fragile and resilient.
The gold leaf is set upon this disrupted ground, resting over a structure shaped by heat, pressure and time. It catches the light with subtle variation, shifting gently as conditions change throughout the day. Beneath its calm luminosity lies a record of making — of mending, endurance and care.
Intimate in scale but rich in substance, Alter invites stillness and close looking. It operates as a small site of focus and reflection, where material, light and time are quietly held in balance.
