Revisit the birth of Aviva Studios with a striking triptych made from recycled materials found on the site
In 2017, artists and creative leaders gathered on the site of the Old Granada Studios, which is today home to our building Aviva Studios. Laurie Anderson performed live before then-leader of Manchester City Council Sir Richard Leese performed a ceremonial breaking of the ground.
This Autumn, Susan Gunn presents Ground Evolution – a triptych made from earth, granite and concrete collected from the disturbed ground. The artwork returns to the site where it all began as a lasting monument to the changing faces of the creative industry in Manchester.
Gunn builds layers of ground earth to create sculptural paintings that are uniquely flawed with breaks, cracks and nuances embedded in the surface. For Ground Evolution, Gunn transformed earth excavated from the building site into a dust resembling pigment using a mechanical process.
Susan Gunn received international recognition as the winner of the Sovereign European Painting Prize in 2005/6. Since then, she has exhibited at venues and galleries across the world – including the Royal Academy, the Yale Center for British Art and The National Museum in Gdańsk. She is an inaugural member of the Contemporary British Painting group.
